OTTAWA -- In a sweatshirt and sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 13-year-old Pamela Beaudoin looked just like most girls her age,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], losing herself in the cosmetics isle in search of the colours that could erase insecurities. Only she didn't look like most girls her age to Sophie Beaudoin, the Ottawa-based modeling manager who would offer the shy girl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was shopping at a Quebec Wal-Mart last September the chance of a lifetime.
"It was like hearing angels sing when I saw her. I just remember her face and hair. It was just like seeing someone come out of a magazine, but she was dressed like every girl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Beaudoin, owner and director of Models International Management.
Beaudoin was shopping for supplies for her modeling academy when she saw the teen (who is now 14) with the perfect pout, satin-like skin, and bright blue-eyes all contained in a five-foot-nine frame.
She thought Pamela had an agent already,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but went to give her a card anyway. She was shocked to hear that the teen who may now walk the gleaming catwalks of Milan and New York during Fashion Week this fall had never considered modeling before.
"I was like,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], `Oh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], my God. Someone told me I was beautiful and called me a model,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],"' said Pamela by phone from New York City Wednesday. She said her mother was hesitant to call the agent because she was "too young," and so she begged her aunt for days to do it.
Since taking some basic modeling courses with Beaudoin in Ottawa last winter, Pamela has graduated from free fashion shows at The Bay in Ottawa,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to making up to a few thousand dollars a day in New York, Montreal and Toronto.
It's an exciting time for the self-confessed lover of Fashion Television and Canada's Next Top Model, because news of the classic beauty's face and ability to give photographers a range of emotion has reached Europe.
"It's very overwhelming for everyone. Obviously it's my dream to find someone who is going to be a supermodel. It's amazing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Beaudoin, adding that Pamela was booked for a shoot with Elle girl magazine through polaroid shots before she even had a portfolio.
She said French Vogue and W Magazine have also expressed an interest,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and agents from all over the world are wanting to represent the down to earth beauty.
But it hasn't come without a price. In the fashion world, photographers and stylists compliment her and fuss over every pore, but at school the 14-year-old said she is often ridiculed.
"A lot of people laugh at me at school. They are not nice with me. to spend the day meeting with photographers and going to castings. Her mother Christine Charette has taken time off from work to travel with Pamela for now. More than anything,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she hopes her "perfectionist" daughter will remain happy in her success.
"I wouldn't call at first. I thought she was too young and it's a hard world,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Charette, who became used to to her daughter trying on her dresses and shoes at a young age. "I said if it makes you happy then I'm with you one hundred per cent."
Pamela's dream would be to see herself on a billboard in New York or Paris, or to make a movie with Adam Sandler because "he's funny."
She is aware that she photographs more like a 20-something, and said she doesn't think of herself as "more beautiful" than other people.
"I don't like my feet at all. I totally hate my feet. My little toes are all ugly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said. "When I see my picture with all the makeup and older-looking with the clothes, I still see myself as a real person."
But she couldn't help but stare and feel "proud" the first time she looked at the photos from her first magazine shoot.
Although her call cards were made up only a few months ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her measurements keep changing as she grows. She said she would like too remain "natural looking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," and usually sports jean shorts and very little jewelry. In her closet you're likely to find clothes by American Eagle or Urban Outfitters although she does enjoy designs by Versace or Marc Jacobs.
Beaudoin said she can't believe how quickly things have been happening for Pamela,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. She laughs at "how sweet" she was when she first handed the slightly "self-conscious" teen her card in September,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"She was just shocked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she was speechless and then she took my card and said `thank you very much,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Beaudoin. "I'm not worried about her she's competitive. She'll be up there with everyone else."
