Knights too good for poor Cowboys
Young Newcastle halfback Tyrone Roberts helped make North Queensland star Johnathan Thurston's 200th game one to forget by stepping into Kurt Gidley's shoes and playing a starring role in the Knights' 34-6 win at Hunter Stadium,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Roberts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has been playing off the bench this season in a utility role,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], got the call-up to start at No.7 with captain and regular halfback Gidley ruled out late with a calf strain.
The pair steered Newcastle around the park and destroyed the Cowboys with some superb kicking in general play on the back of a dominant effort from their forwards.
Roberts scored a try and kicked five goals for a tally of 14 points in the six tries to one victory.
Things didn't start well for the Knights who trailed after just nine minutes when Cowboys back-rower Gavin Cooper barged over to score the opening try of the game with Thurston kicking the extras to make it 6-0,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Newcastle hit back soon after with three tries in 10 minutes with four-pointers to Roberts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Akuila Uate and Alex McKinnon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who came into the centres in place of the injured Timana Tahu.
The home side ran away with the game in the second half after leading 14-6 at halftime with Uate scoring a double while winger James McManus and fullback Darius Boyd also scored tries,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Inspirational hooker Danny Buderus made his return from off-season back surgery off the bench, coming on midway through the first half to turn in a solid performance.
Bennett wasn't surprised to see Roberts step up the way he did in place of Gidley after playing plenty of first grade last year for the Knights filling in for the injury-plagued skipper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"He's a talented player,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we all know that. What he went though last year is going to help him be the player he is this year and we'll see a lot more of him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bennett said.
The supercoach also praised Mullen's performance too,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"The forwards were getting forward and he was playing off the back of that and the kick-chase was outstanding so it was just all about pressure and they just kept applying it. Mullen had a great kicking game," he said.
"You see Aku (Uate) get his tries and McManus and all those ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Boyd ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. they invariably came off Jarrod's passes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
Thurston was gutted after the match and said his team were a long way from being the premiership heavyweights they were touted as in the build-up to the season with the Cowboys belted by Melbourne and now Newcastle in successive weeks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
