This is another excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling and is seldom crowded. <br />For those whose primary goal is a good hike, continue on the way beside Big Creek, which abounds with lovely views, small cascades and well-hidden signs of the loggers and farmers who once populated the area. <br />This was one of the first parts of the Smokies to be cut by logging companies and inhabited by their employees. The rails of the logging railroad were removed in the late 1920s, but it's still possible to see rusted chains and cables. <br />In addition to using rail power, the loggers made full use of Big Creek to move the enormous chestnuts, oaks and poplars harvested in the Smokies. The loggers built temporary dams called splash dams and rolled the logs into the backed-up water. <br />When there was a sufficient accumulation of logs, they blasted the dam with dynamite,<a href="http://duveticadeutschlandshop.halod.com/" target="_blank" class="postlink"><span style="font-weight: bold">Duvetica Deutschland</span></a>, and the logs were carried downstream by the flood. Four men were killed when the dynamite exploded prematurely during one of these maneuvers. <br />Nature has done a spectacular job of reclaiming the land, and the second growth forest is now quite dense and shady. <br />A dripping spring that crosses a mossy rock is visible at 2.8 miles. The clear spring-fed stream gives up few secrets of its more violent past, but though the water appears clear, it's not safe to drink without treating it first. <br />Those who want a longer hike can continue along the gentle but steadily uphill grade to the Walnut Bottoms Campsite at 5.3 miles.
