The Dow Jones industrial average had posted 22 closing highs since the first of the year, before going into an up-and-down cycle during which it was down in six of its last sessions and up in five.On Thursday, the Dow gained 80.03 points, 0.53 percent, to 15,040.62. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 13.66 points, 0.85 percent, to 1,622.56.
