Suzhou Social,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
This city of Suzhou is located in the south eastern part of Jiangsu Province,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and is called the Venice of the East; because they have such an extensive canal system running through the town. The main Grand Canal was built for the Emperor and the extensive silk trade; it was also used for traders to take their goods right up to the back doors of the houses which also were situated on the canals.
The team only has a short stay in Suzhou so our first stop on the program was at the Zhuo Zheng Yuan Garden the history of this building dates back approx. 800 years; this was once used by a government official and his family. There could have been up to 20 family members and up to 30 staff living in the building at any one time. The building is actually only quite small however the use of the space is very intelligent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the use of rock and water to replicate being in the country.
The next stop on the tour was the Silk Factory. Our tour guide Yvonne explained to us how the silk is made and with the domestic silk worms they live for 4 days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they eat as many mulberry leaves as possible and after this time they boiled in hot water,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the silk is extracted and spun and used to make a wide range of items. We saw this whole process and also saw the silk being woven into fabric. We finished the tour in the gift shop where some of the students purchased silk quilts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cushion covers and pillows.
In the park just on dusk we heard music coming from the gardens,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there were people exercising and at different levels of enthusiasm.
The food in Suzhou is quite traditional,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as dumplings and noodle dishes; many of the restaurants have photos of the food,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this helps you make your selection easy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], just point and pick,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and also we noticed there is so much watermelon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], many shops just selling watermelon.
The weather in Suzhou was humid but not as humid as Shanghai,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in fact walking round the town of Suzhou in the evening was very nice. Also noticed in the evening time many ppl are sitting outside relaxing in their sleep wear,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they bring their comfy chairs out on to the footpath and enjoy the cool air,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some were even playing cards with their friends on the street.
