He weighed a pound and three-quarters at birth and still wasn't able to sit up at the age of 2. His mother, in efforts to encourage his development, bought an organ for $10 at a garage sale and cut the legs off it.
"I put it on the floor in front of him," said his mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Janice. "The first six weeks he played every combination of notes; it was horrible. Then my husband and I watched `Lawrence of Arabia' on TV. Six weeks later we heard the theme song from `Lawrence of Arabia' coming from his room." It was their son.
DeBlois has savant syndrome, which means he excels in certain areas, especially those involving music, and has great difficulty with others. For example, he's still learning to buckle his belt and can't tie his own shoes (wearing slip-ons and ones with Velcro are a help),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he sings in 11 languages and when he gets near a piano,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's quite amazing.
DeBlois will perform in Danbury Saturday, Nov. 20. This musical genius will entertain at three events at the on Main Street. DeBlois will perform in a concert to benefit Danbury . Tickets for the Nov. 20 concert are $35 and $70. Those who purchase a $70 ticket can attend a reception with DeBlois.
, an internationally renowned flutist,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has performed everywhere from the White House to "The Today Show," will join him for a few selections during the concert.
If DeBlois looks familiar, it may be that you've seen him before. He was the subject of "Journey of the Heart," a CBS Movie of the Week. He's also been on many TV shows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], from "Access Hollywood" to "Entertainment Tonight." And there are several videos of him performing, which can be seen on YouTube.
DeBlois lives in Randolph, Mass., in an apartment next to his mother's. He supports them both with his music and generously offers his services at many charity events. Meanwhile, she's his manager and producer and helps him with the personal care he needs. She also helps him answer e-mails from fans.
"People can't understand how he can play 22 instruments,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but can't cut his own food," she said, in a phone interview. "To understand what Tony can do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], think about the character in the movie `Rain Man,' what the Rain Man could do with math,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Tony can do with music."
DeBlois tries to do as much as he can on his own. He has a talking microwave and shared that he and his mom recently found a talking egg timer that will help him know how long to gargle after brushing his teeth. He can brush his own teeth, but Janice helps with flossing.
"We have a special message for you," Tony DeBlois said. "It's OK to be different. Believe in yourself. Have high hopes. The two most important words are `thank you' and the three P's are practice, practice,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], practice."
The Danbury Children First benefit concert in the evening will support the parent leadership and early literacy programs that Danbury Children First offers in the community.
