today's cobbler with vintage tools,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Descending the narrow steps into Sole Survivor feels as though entering a film set, not really a shoe repair center. The little Kensington Market nook is a calm, dark space,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a cool stone floor and merely a few rays of sunshine leaking through the open door.
The time-worn machines in the corner don't appear usable, but they are. A commercial steel sewing machine, known as a patcher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], is an ideal shade of film-set verdigris, while a heel-shaping finisher is noisy, huge and imposing.
Sitting among these archaic instruments is the dark-haired owner. If the were a skill movie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she might be an elf of some kind, played through the shy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stubborn indie actress Lily Taylor. But Sole Survivor isn't a film set, and it is human owner is Katie Reed. She's 27,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and she's a cobbler.
"It seemed like something Let me try," says Reed, who agrees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unconcerned, that cobbling is an odd field to find a newbie. Originally from Dundas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Reed went to university in Montreal, before hanging out travelling and teaching in Japan.
She worked briefly inside a Toronto urban planning office before deciding she wasn't cut out for any "quote-unquote professional job,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," then ended up "helping a lady make letters from twigs." It had been this unusual occupational turn that led Reed to consider a tactile profession. Round the same time, she went to get her own shoes fixed, at Mr. Soles on College St.
"He was cutting a heel and that i said, 'what is that?" she remembers. "I was clueless that leather could seem like that." Soon realizing there is no grad school for aspiring cobblers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Reed visited every decent shoe repair place she may find,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trying to find a gig as an unpaid apprentice.
Toronto's reputable cobblers are longtime veterans, like the 78-year-old Novelty Shoe Rebuilders on Yonge St. A minimum of 30 shoe fixers - all of them men nearing retirement age - turned Reed down. "Most of them said, 'I don't have the patience,' " she recalls. "In a way it's type of positive. These were just way too busy."
Last spring, Reed finally found a Hamilton man willing to teach her. In half annually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she learned how you can cut leather and rubber,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], how to stitch on the patcher, and shape heels about the giant finishing sander. Her mentor helped her source her very own tools and late last August, she opened this spot, Sole Survivor on Kensington Ave.
"I seem like many people who come here haven't had their shoes repaired before," says Reed of her clientele. More established cobblers cater to a mature, wealthier crowd, but Sole Survivor customers often find a cute set of vintage pumps with a broken heel in Kensington and stop through the shop on a whim. Soon, impressed with the quality of Reed's work, they enlist her to fix all of the beloved shoes (and leather bags) that were headed for landfill.
Between eco guilt and recessionary worries, getting stuff fixed is the new shopping spree. A new heel here's $25, tops, and Reed is happy to obtain creative. Last week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she had cut the legs off a set of beige leather cowboy boots - actually, the part that goes over the calf is known as the "barrel" - her instructions being to build new, more feminine foot coverings before dyeing the happy couple red. "The jobs are always a bit different," Reed says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], approaching the project with satisfaction.
