Tommy Meehan
The death took place recently of Mr. Thomas (Tommy) Meehan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Culleen, Kilsallagh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Westport in the care of his wife,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], family and neighbours. Tommy was 57 years of age and was originally from Cabra West, Dublin 7.
He started work at the tender age of 14 selling shoes in George's Street, Dublin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], moving on to make-up in Max Factor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before settling in Irish Raleigh Bicycles as a quality control steward until its closure in the 80's. During this period he met and married his wife Nellie at the tender age of 20; she was just 19 years. They had two sons in Dublin, Paul and Andrew. During the recession of the 80's, Tommy re-skilled in construction and developed a love of carpentry which stayed with him up to his final illness. The family moved to Dunsany, Co. Meath and Tommy became very prominent in community affairs. He founded the local youth club,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], created the annual Christmas Crib and was the backstage manager for all local drama productions. While in Meath they welcomed their daughter Roseanne into their lives. Unfortunately Tommy suffered serious illness and was forced to retire from active work. At this time he took on the role of home-maker, in particular the care of their new infant daughter. Their son Paul trained as a chef and moved to the west. It was while visiting him that Tommy and Nellie fell in love with the Westport area and moved there in 2000. Tommy integrated very well into the area and was known by a broad span of people.
He enjoyed fishing and he had a special talent for fortune telling, a trait he inherited from his late mother and many locals enjoyed his special stories and predictions. He had a great love of life and got on especially well with young people and was often found entertaining the children at the local school in Lecanvey. He enjoyed socialising,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], especially at Clew Bay Hotel where his wife worked. Tommy's last battle with illness started in 2008 and during the next three years he fought it with great courage, dignity and bravery. He rarely complained and still had a wonderful sense of humour.
Tommy died on July 15,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 2011 at home and was waked there on Saturday and Sunday night,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], July 16 and 17. He was removed to Glasnevin Crematorium on Monday,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], July 18 for Rite of Committal. The funeral ceremony epitomised Tommy's character,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one of laughter, humour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], music and good tidings. Eulogies were give by his brother-in-law,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Nicky and his son Andrew. He will be very sadly missed by his wife Nellie, son Paul (Westport),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], daughter-in-law Ashling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], grandchildren Kirsten, Megan, James,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Clodagh and Laoise, his son Andrew (Galway), daughter-in-law Debbie and granddaughter Keela, daughter Roseanne and partner Rowan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brothers Con, Pat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Roger,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Jack, Tony and sister Marie,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; nieces and nephews, other relatives including the Kehoe family in Dublin, neighbours and friends. Should you see him in the next life be prepared for his wide smile and his trademark expression 'Greetings'.
