The sweet smell of a Cologne shopping spree
Cologne-Cologne has great shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we were told. Hey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we're all ears. Rather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we're all feet. And their sizing availability goes up to Big Foot sizes 14 to 15. Drag queens take note.
That did it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. We were so there.
But first,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we had to check out Cologne's No. 1 destination,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Cologne Cathedral, stopping en route to admire a clever stainless steel shoe horn in the shape of an elongated woman's stiletto in a shop window.
Should Madam not care to tour the Cologne Cathedral,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she could always shop Louis Vuitton, Lacoste and Hermes right across from it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], next to the Dom Hotel.
And right down the street opposite the Town Hall is Parfum Farina,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the birthplace of Eau de Cologne in 1709. It is named in honour of its creator,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Italian perfumer John Maria Farina (1685-1766).
Schildergasse is touted as Europe's most frequented shopping street,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's more like navigating The Eaton Centre on a school holiday. It runs amok with chain stores including Mango,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], McDonalds, Benetton, Esprit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Starbucks - we counted four H stores within one block. How do you say "overkill" in German?
That said, Kämpgen on the Schildergasse strip featured great handmade sneakers in purple and silver on sale for 79 euros (about $125 Cdn). Note: Sales are denoted by a percentage sign in the windows. We got all excited when we mistook it for a 90 per cent off sign.
Pfeilstrasse and Mittelstrasse are dotted with a range of high-end designer shops and trendy boutiques can be found in the side streets Breite Strasse and Ehrenstrasse,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Belgian Quarter is Cologne's West Queen West: destination for funkier and cutting edgier fashion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], specifically around Bruesseler Platz and Lindenstrasse.
We hit deep discount at Designer Outlet at Apostelnstrasse 12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which carries Versace, Cavalli,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Armani,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Gianfranco Ferre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Polo and assorted European labels all drastically reduced.
There is also a branch of the boutique in Aachen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which sounds like it should be followed by gesundheit.
We happened upon the awesome vintage store Galerie Kegel on St. Apern Strasse 10, just as it was closing and could only salivate over the mounds of costume jewellery on sale for 5 euros ($. Everything else in the shop was 50 per cent off.
Shop everywhere,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even where you least expect to. The necklace worn by a woman working behind the souvenir desk at Augustusburg Palace in Brühl was worthy of something by Marni.
It was made by a local designer and only 7 euros ($11),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
There is fantastic shopping in the tiny town of Koblenz. We saw a branch of Stefanel (great for reasonably priced sportswear that looks like Milan runway) in Jesuiten Platz and Doppel Rube, at Liefrauenkirche 16, carries great, bright,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], cotton smock dresses that aren't just for itty bitty pretties.
Entenpfuhl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Firmungsstrasse and Pfuhlgasse are the main shopping streets. Check out vintage store La Boom and Schnell for hats.
The best bargain in Koblenz had to be the spareribs at the Altes Brauhaus resto,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. You'd think you'd ordered brontosaurus,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The duty-free shopping is legendary at Frankfurt Airport - they always carry Veuve Clicquot champagne - but we were told that locals actually shop at the mall for non-duty free goodies and we can see why. There are scores of high-end stores like Tumi, Etro,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Hugo Boss,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Emenegildo Zegna on sale.
Marc O'Polo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the German version of Diesel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had magnificent scarves for 49 euros ($75).
We totally lost it at Burresi,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Terminal 1, Halle B,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where they were having a humungous shoe sale:
Prada sandals were slashed to 198 euros ($310); D sky-high wedges were reduced to 299 ($465) from 645 euros ($1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000).
Even the fabled YSL caged boots that sold out in Toronto immediately were available in all sizes and on sale for 580 euros ($900),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], down from 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 ($1,550).
