Strictly Speaking,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Public Speaking
The absolute priority for any public speaker is to capture and maintain the attention of their audience and to never let it go, and the easiest way to do that is to entertain. That actually posed a bit of a problem for me tonight because I assumed I'd have to be entertaining about public speaking and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], let's be honest, it is the most reviled past time in the history of mankind. In fact, most people would prefer to spend eternity locked in a very small room with their mother-in-law than pursue public speaking, even as a hobby. And that got me thinking because, for every other pursuit humanity has embraced there's always a certain type of person who excels. Fit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], strong, healthy people dominate in athletics. Beautiful,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], yet incredibly vacuous, people go on to be celebrities replete with cute little doggies in their purse. But public speakers? And then it dawned on me. See, public speaking is the extreme sport of the obese. Trust me on this. I've walked no more than 3 metres from that mercurial arch way to these spotlights,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and yet my palms are sweaty, I'm clammy across the brow and my palpitating heart is pumping adrenaline through my entire body. Absolute maximum rush,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for absolute minimum exertion. Public speaking, then, should obviously be the domain of the fat people. But this should come as no surprise because perhaps the greatest of the 20th century was fat. Winston Churchill,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a flabby jowl,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pin-striped zeppelin of a man,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose past-times included popping pills like a candy-raver, smoking like a British car in the Australian summer and walking Johnny Walker-ing that is. And yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what do we remember him for? We remember him for his speeches of course. And great speech-making can be kind like that sometimes. But tonight? Cruel? Kind? At the very least, I hope it's been entertaining.
It's an oft-heard phrase nowadays that 'shoes or clothes maketh the man,' and there might be more scientifically delineated ways of determining that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unless you're a South African sports doctor,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it does seem that Australia is now going down this path of materialism. We were once a nation of the fair go and freedom and equality to some extent,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], um not for everybody until about '63 with the referendum, but, but, most people. we did have a fair bit of equality. But now days it seems that possessions mean more. You judge people on their house, or on their car, or on their shoes which is a bit interesting,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because I actually don't have a pair of shoes, I had to borrow these but how did Australia become like that? When did we start judging people on their possessions? When did we stop giving people a fair go and stop welcoming people to this country? And it really is an unfair saying because everybody really does know that Hawaiian shirts are of that anyway.
