"Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid" - Einstein.
Case 1. Ahsan, age 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], non-verbal. Obsessively plays the Sponge Bob game on the iPad, mastering one level after another. But getting him to eat lunch, take a bath, go to school, even a trip to the park, are a struggle. He became increasingly dependent on physical prompting because verbal prompting didn't work. The only time the mother could do her daily errands was when Ahsan watched Sponge Bob,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or played the same game over and over again on the iPad.
Ahsan's mother took his pictures and made a daily visual schedule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Whenever there is a change in the daily activities she takes him to the schedule and says that we have to go to the doctor instead of the park,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Initially there was resistance but not anymore.
Transitions have become smooth. He now understands that there is no more than half an hour each for the game and TV every day. It took him three months to understand, but his mother persisted. She pointed to the activity together with verbal instructions when it was time for lunch or work etc. Ahsan is a much calmer and teachable kid now.
Having an innate sense of time, he knows that he can't play the game before 5 pm and has developed enough self-control to stop playing when his time is up. His mother now even uses a stop watch; the beep indicating that he has to put the iPad in the finish basket. Ahsan's mother is very happy now; she has found a way to communicate with her son.
Case 2. Aryan, age 6, verbal and high functioning. Would run around, pick and drop items when he accompanied his mother for grocery shopping. Having SID (Sensory Integration Dysfunction) made it difficult to process and sift too much auditory,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], visual,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], olfactory (smell) sensations at the super market. He just couldn't wait to get what he wanted. After finishing his favourite cookie or juice, he would immediately want another.
Aryan could read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so his mother made a shopping list for him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], indicating the quantity as well. One packet of salted Lays or two sugar free chewing gums; one Diego DVD or a pack of Crayola crayons.
Before doing her own shopping, she would take Aryan to the different aisles and get his shopping done. He crosses each item as he puts is it in his cart. She makes him pay at the counter. He remains calm and sits in the push cart for as long as his mother shops. Aryan's mother was so excited that she even extended the strategy to other daily activities.
When he needs clothes, she makes a list. Aryan draws the kind of T-shirt or shorts that he wants, he even chooses the colour and design. At the store, he communicates with the salesperson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], showing him what he needs.
Ahsan and Aryan are kids on ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). Their mothers have struggled but have developed ingenious solutions based on existing research and information that has been tried, tested and proven successful. Once autism is diagnosed, families are faced with special concerns and problems. The realisation that the child may have lifelong problems with communication and other areas of development is a distressing experience for parents and other family members.
Families are faced with countless challenges,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unknown circumstances and are in search of answers. Some concerns can be answered by professionals and some are difficult to predict because autism takes unique forms in each child and its complications vary as the child grows. The parents' first concerns always are: is there a cure? Where is their child on the spectrum and will s/he ever be independent? Optimistic answers can often be misleading as the outcome is as much influenced by the treating professionals' skill and ability as by the parents finding creative and ingenious ways to solve these recurring and ever-changing problems.
With the alarming increase in the number of children being diagnosed with autism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], people have become familiar with the symptoms of autism. As soon as parents notice a slight change or deviation from the norm in their child's behaviour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the first thing they suspect is autism. Some major indicators and distinctive features of autism are: communication deficit,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], repetitive stereotypic pattern of behaviour and fixed interests.
According to late Dr Eric Schopler, repetitive behaviour is a manifestation of the anxiety that stems from the inability to process and sort incoming information from the different senses. Twirling, hand flapping,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spinning of objects are different symptoms that appear early. A fixation with light, spinning wheels,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], written words, clothespins and strings without the acknowledgement of the object as a whole, can be noticed.
Dr Schopler calls these fixations as behaviours that are only "the tip of the iceberg" due to underlining neurological dysfunctions.
It is instructive to know that, while these repetitive patterns may become behaviour problems, some of them can also be used as strengths and utilised in the development of skills. A mother of a four-year old, whose daughter had an obsession with the written word, used her interest to teach her reading at an early age.
A resource teacher of a six-year old boy, who would never wear socks and shoes, used his fascination with the weekly 'show and tell' to make him wear them. She asked the child to wear the socks and shoes and talk about them. Since that day the boy wears them for school every morning himself. Similarly, informed parents have devised ingenious solutions to problems like self-biting, touching generators and incessantly flushing the toilets.相关的主题文章:
