S&P 500 breaches 1,700 for first time, closing at 1,706.87 points
NEW YORK,[url=http://www.trueireligion.com]True Religion Jeans Outlet[/url], Aug. 1 () -- U.S. stock markets closed with solid gains Thursday on a slew of positive economic reports, sending the Standard & Poor's 500 to a record close.For the first time, the S&P index topped 1,700 points, closing at 1,706.87 on a gain of 21.14 points or 1.25 percent. The Dow Jones industrial averaged added 128.48 points or 0.83 percent to reach 15,628.02. The tech-dominated Nasdaq composite index added 49.37 points or 1.36 percent to 3,675.74.On the New York Stock Exchange, 1,900 issues advanced, while 1,182 declined on volume of 3.7 billion shares traded.Stocks were helped by manufacturing data from China, the eurozone, Britain and the United States that showed manufacturing made solid gains across the board. In the eurozone, only Spain's purchasing managers' index showed the manufacturing sector in contraction.The 10-year treasury note fell 1 1/32 to yield 2.709 percent.Japan's Nikkei index gained 2.47 percent or 337.45 points to 14,005.77.In Britain, the FTSE 100 index added 0.92 percent or 60.92 points to 6,681.98.In after-hours trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange, crude oil added $2.72 or 2.59 percent to $107.75 a barrel.Gold shed $2.80 cents or 0.21 percent to close at $1,310.20 per troy ounce on the NYMEX Comex division while silver lost 3.8 cents to close at $19.59, off 0.19 percent.On currency markets, the euro was lower at $1.3213.
