Wolves hunt down Doyle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
And Dubliner Ward believes that the signing of Doyle will make the Wolves strikeforce even more potent for the challenge ahead in the Premier League,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The month-long chase for Doyle finally ended last night when the player, having assessed bids from Premier League clubs Sunderland, Bolton and Fulham,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], decided to go with the option of signing for former Ireland boss Mick McCarthy at Wolves.
The fee is reported to be £6million up front, with more cash to come Reading's way in terms of bonuses if Wolves stay up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but sadly there is no windfall for Doyle's former club Cork City, as the Turner's Cross outfit last year allowed Reading buy out the sell-on clause which was due for Doyle in the event of any transfer fee.
That deal was done last November, when Cork were trying to raise cash to keep the club in football, but today that looks like a very bad piece of business for Cork,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who would have been entitled to £600,000 from the Doyle move to Wolves but instead allowed Reading 'buy out' the clause for a reported £200,000, so Reading keep all of the transfer fee.
Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni will be glad to see Doyle complete the move which guarantees him Premier League football next season as Ireland close in on a place in the World Cup finals, and Doyle will instantly feel at home at Molineux where there is a strong Irish presence in the form of manager McCarthy and players Keogh, Foley and Ward.
"The Irish connection is obviously a big thing in our favour for him," said former Bohemians man Ward,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who was a key figure in defence for Wolves as they won promotion to the Premier League last season.
"There's a few lads here who know him - I've played against him over in Ireland and since he's been here with Reading. He also knows Andy Keogh and Kevin Foley from the Irish set-up.
"We're a club on the up, we're all around the same age and hungry for success. We feel we can go places."
Doyle will be relieved that the move to Wolves today has finally gone through, just 24 hours before the formal opening of the international transfer window, as the player has in the past admitted that the constant speculation about his future was difficult to deal with.
Since he came to the fore with Reading, following his £78,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 move from Cork City in 2004,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the player has established himself as one of the best young strikers in the English game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and once Reading were relegated from the Premier League in 2008,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it was felt that it was only a matter of time before he moved on and played for a top flight club again.
Reading have done well out of the deal: he scored 55 league goals in 156 games for the Royals,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], not bad for a player who cost them that tiny fee of £78,000,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which now looks like the bargain of the decade,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and now the sale of Doyle has brought £6m into the club's coffers, offering new manager Brendan Rodgers enough money to fund the signing of three or four top-class signings.
Now that Reading have lost Doyle, it seems only a matter of time before they also lose his Ireland team-mate Stephen Hunt, though it remains to be seen if clubs are willing to cough up with £5million to sign him.
Reading will retain a strong Irish presence, as Shane Long and Noel Hunt are still in the first team squad, while former Cork City man Dave Mooney will now hope to step up and fill Doyle's shoes after he impressed on loan to Norwich City last season.
In Irish terms, Doyle's move to Wolves is the most high profile transfer so far this summer, though the good news for Trapattoni is that defender Stephen Kelly is guaranteed Premier League football next season following his £600,000 move from Birmingham City to Fulham, while relegated Middlesbrough are very happy with their coup of signing Dublin-born winger Mark Yeates from Colchester for £450,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000.
But the agents of Irish footballers in the UK are not planning to relax any time soon,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as the immediate futures of Richard Dunne, Paul McShane, Anthony Stokes and Daryl Murphy are up in the air while free agents Liam Miller, David Connolly and Jon Douglas are also keen to find new clubs.相关的主题文章:
