Directions: From Knoxville, take I-40 about 60 miles east to the Waterville Exit 451. Cross the bridge over the Little Pigeon River, turning left and continuing past a river put-in, a small park with good restrooms, and Mountain Mama's, a restaurant, store and hostel beloved by Appalachian Trail hikers. At the intersection where the paved road ends, continue straight. Pass the Big Creek Ranger Station and park in the large parking area at the end of the road. Walk back up the road a few hundred feet to the trailhead, a gated jeep road on your left. Fear of litigation and skyrocketing prices of waterfront property have shut down many favorite swimming spots,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but a few good ones still exist at local, state and national parks.
The swimming hole at the Townsend Y is the best known, but on weekends it's often too packed with cars and people to be worth the effort.
Though it's a little longer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the trip to Midnight Hole and Mouse Creek Falls in the Big Creek watershed just off the Pigeon River is worth the 60-minute drive. Big Creek is as clear a stream as any you'd hope to find in the Smokies.
The trail itself is another matter. Since it's very popular with horseback riders, you'll find more than a little evidence of their passage on the trail. If horses or their manure really bother you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this is not the place for you. For many children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the horses and riders are an added attraction, but children should be educated in advance about appropriate behavior around the equine species. (Don't move too quickly, stand behind them or raise a walking stick within sight of them, and ask permission before touching.)
The Big Creek Trail is actually an old jeep road which is plenty wide for walking side by side. It is quite rocky and,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], even though the distance is short, I recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes and taking flip-flops, old canvas sneakers or swim shoes along.
The trail starts out high above Big Creek, but the two eventually meet. One of the first attractions after the rock house is a rather small cascade or waterfall that forms a natural slide or chute that's fun to ride - if you dare. There's a deep pool at the bottom,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it's a bit too small for any real swimming.
At 1.5 miles you'll approach Midnight Hole, so named because of the inky-dark waters at the deepest part of the pool, estimated to be about 12 feet deep. The pool is formed by two 6- to 8-foot falls that rush over the right angles created by two huge boulders jammed against a third smaller stone in the center. These create a current that's fun to swim against but only possible for the strongest swimmer to broach.
The boulder on the left is a favorite place for jumping off, and the water is plenty deep in most places,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though there are some underwater boulders at the shallow end of the rocks. Be careful and don't dive!
Beyond the boulders, the water spreads out into a large swimming area that becomes shallower to the point that it is eventually only a foot deep,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and peppered with stones big enough for sitting, sunning and picnicking. At the shallow end,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the water is wonderfully clear. You can see every rock on the bottom, but it's still fun to take a mask and snorkel the deeper corners of Midnight Hole, which swarms with trout.
Though swimming pools are tepid and almost bath-like at this time of summer, Midnight Hole is still icy cold,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], almost to the point of numbing your limbs. When you get the shivers, make like a salamander and soak up some of the warmth generated by the rocks.
If you find Midnight Hole too crowded for your liking - and sometimes it is - you can hike on another half-mile to view the spectacular 50-foot drop of Mouse Creek Falls. Not quite visible from the trail in summer, the approach is marked by several hitching posts for the horses.
There's no good swimming here, but continue a quarter mile or so farther and you'll come to a wooden footbridge that crosses the creek. This is another excellent spot for swimming and snorkeling and is seldom crowded.
For those whose primary goal is a good hike, continue on the way beside Big Creek, which abounds with lovely views, small cascades and well-hidden signs of the loggers and farmers who once populated the area.
This was one of the first parts of the Smokies to be cut by logging companies and inhabited by their employees. The rails of the logging railroad were removed in the late 1920s, but it's still possible to see rusted chains and cables.
In addition to using rail power, the loggers made full use of Big Creek to move the enormous chestnuts, oaks and poplars harvested in the Smokies. The loggers built temporary dams called splash dams and rolled the logs into the backed-up water.
When there was a sufficient accumulation of logs, they blasted the dam with dynamite,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the logs were carried downstream by the flood. Four men were killed when the dynamite exploded prematurely during one of these maneuvers.
Nature has done a spectacular job of reclaiming the land, and the second growth forest is now quite dense and shady.
A dripping spring that crosses a mossy rock is visible at 2.8 miles. The clear spring-fed stream gives up few secrets of its more violent past, but though the water appears clear, it's not safe to drink without treating it first.
Those who want a longer hike can continue along the gentle but steadily uphill grade to the Walnut Bottoms Campsite at 5.3 miles. There are cables for hoisting backpacks and food bags out of reach of bears,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], raccoons and other critters. The nearby stream makes this a particularly lovely spot for an overnight stay.
