It Sucks to be Gray Powell Right Now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
There's almost no one in the universe I feel sorrier for at the moment than Gray Powell, the young software engineer who has become a meme overnight for being the one responsible for losing Apple's precious iPhone 4G prototype in a bar.
I mean, imagine. . That's right. Apple completely blew it on this one, because the parties that found the prototype phone in the Redwood City bar actually tried to return it to Apple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Apple denied knowledge or ownership.
What did Apple do instead? They remotely deactivated the phone,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which was apparently running Apple OS 4.0 software before they pulled the switch on it. That made it impossible to return,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so those who had the phone approached Gizmodo, a tech blogging site owned by Gawker,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who paid $5000 for the phone to see if it was indeed an Apple prototype.
Gizmodo did due diligence on the phone, dismantled it, photographed it, and provided ample evidence that it was indeed an Apple product, and not anything currently available in production.
Since then, Apple has sent a letter to Gizmodo demanding the prototype back, and the phone was reportedly returned in the last 24 hours.
In the meantime, who is hung out to dry?
Our Gray Powell, who likes German beer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and had a cushy job as a software engineer at Apple. Since his name hit the press late Monday, he had to change his Facebook page,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and sites cropped up all over the Internet bringing malware with them.
I like to think Gray is a pretty nice guy, who just happened to have made a really costly mistake in an unguarded moment. He's probably a lot of fun to kick back with and have a few beers. He might not be the best choice to guard a super-secret electronic prototype.
But the biggest mistake was Apple's,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], in not taking the phone back when it was first offered to them. In that process, Gray Powell is paying a very big price.
And I'm not sure he deserves it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Good synopsis of the whole affair. As SheilaTGTG55 said, I didn't realize that Apple didn't take the phone back at first. I have to disagree with you on one point though: I wouldn't call working at Apple a cushy job. Although they pay pretty well and their stock has been going up lately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], their employees are basically working all the time in a high-pressure, and often adversarial environment. Many of them hardly ever see their families, and when they do get around to going on a vacation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they are besieged with calls from work on their company-issued cell phones. But, I guess if you're a young guy like Gray Powell without a family, those kinds of things wouldn't matter to you too much anyway.
I see this from a different view than I'd seen discussed here or elsewhere.
I would think they'd have an absolute rule that prototypes like this do not leave campus, ever. You keep them under lock and key at Appleville. You don't take them home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], much less to bars. If they have such a rule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then this guy knowingly broke it as well as being careless in a bar (hmm, wonder why?) and I'm sorry, I don't feel bad for him. He effed up not just once,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for a moment,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but big time by taking the thing from work.
If they don't have such a rule,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], then it's the company's bad, and they should not be punishing him but rather looking at their policies. Because yes, he effed up but it's like when hospital employees make errors that hurt patients -- you can blame the person who made the error or you can realize that human beings are inevitably going to make mistakes and therefore analyze errors and change your systems and processes to reduce the opportunity for such mistakes to get made at all. And in this case, this would lead again to a rule not allowing prototypes or other sensitive materials to leave campus. If they don't have such a rule, this is really Apple's fault.
Silkstone, it's my understanding that every day there are people in several different companies testing out new electronic prototypes outside of their office. This is apparently standard procedure when new phones and other devices are being prepared to be brought to market. There are a number of reasons why they leave the campus to be tested in other areas.
The outing of Gray Powell as employee who left behind the prototype is a complicated story. It seems Apple still had him (at least a couple of days ago, anyway) in their employ, and Gizmodo/Gawker were the ones who chose to disclose his name. I wonder if he'll take action against them for doing that, or whether his job is secure. Since employees at Foxconn are leaping out of tall buildings, one has to wonder what kind of pressure is brought to bear on young software engineers with Apple who lose prototypes.
"I think this was staged. That might be cynical,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but so much of Apple is marketing."
My sentiments exactly. If Apple was sooooo worried that the phone would be leaked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], would they really float one out into the real world? Who hasn't lost or misplaced their cell phone (permanently or impermanently)?
I don't feel sorry for dude. Firstly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], because there is absolutely no evidence that he has suffered at all from this -- as far as we can tell he still has a job. Secondly, I will hypothesize that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], based on his prep school name, he has plenty of other opportunities available to him.
