They're cute and they're already equipped for towing toys or untying shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but these Palmetto pups will soon grow to serve a much greater need.
They're Southeastern Guide Dogs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they're here to help those who are visually impaired.
"These dogs are literally someone's eyes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Jennifer Bement with Southeastern Guide Dogs. "They provide (the visually impaired) with mobility and independence."
Currently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the dogs on the 23-acre Palmetto campus travel all over Manatee County to receive the care they need. But that is about to change.
Everything from eye exams to endoscopies could happen as early as next summer on the same land on which the dogs currently train,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Our vets are really busy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they can take care of anything in this new facility that we're about to build,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bement said.
A new building is in the works and will be named "The Margaret and Isaac Barpal Veterinary Center" after a couple who donated $750,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 toward the $1.5 million it will cost to build.
Bement says having veterinary care on campus for the guide dogs will save travel and training time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. It will help the next wave of guide dogs grow up healthy and ready to change lives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"When you see somebody who has never walked with a dog before get out there and be able to hold their head up high and walk with confidence,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it's the most amazing feeling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Bement added.
