Boxing Day shoppers crowd stores in Vancouver,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Downtown Vancouver streets were lined Wednesday with eager shoppers ducking in and out of brand-name stores looking for Boxing Day bargains,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
At Future Shop on Granville and Robson, store manager John Kennedy turned on the environment conditioner for that convenience of shoppers browsing in winter coats. Boxing Day may be the single-largest shopping day's the entire year for that electronics retailer, and in-store sales still outstrip online sales - still "livin' large,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Kennedy said - regardless of the growth of pre-Christmas discounts and Black Friday sales becoming popular north of the border.
The very first customer arrived soon after midnight to ensure he got his DJ-quality Monster brand headphones at 50 per cent off,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], for $149.99. He settled on LCD while Godinho finished her Starbucks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], looking at the floor.
"I would like to visit Zara,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
But her dad wasn't quite done shopping despite saving $400 about the flatscreen 55-inch Samsung. "I'm just looking for any good deal," he explained.
Future Shop spokesman Elliott Chun said the average sale was $500.
A brand new Bank of Montreal survey of 1,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],000 respondents suggests six in 10 Canadians planned to hit the stores on Boxing Day.
And while 22 percent said they planned to shop for themselves,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 34 per cent planned to shop for others as well.
On average, Canadians spent $1,610 this holidays,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bringing in $60 billion for retailers.
Zara, the fast-fashion store on Robson,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was jammed with shoppers seeking to save $10 on coloured denim or $20 on leopard-print ankle boots. There were nearly as many boyfriends outside avoiding the lineup for that check out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which snaked halfway around the inside of the store.
Sabrina Roman waited Half an hour in order to save $60 on a wool pea coat for herself and $20 on the knitted sweater on her daughter.
She said she was spending her Christmas money and otherwise wouldn't be shopping for extra,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"It seems like there are plenty of excellent deals before Christmas, and things type of seem picked over by Boxing Day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said.
On the block, Ana Juergensen acquired an outfit for New Year's Eve, two pairs of shoes and a tie clip for her partner. at Aritzia in Pacific Centre.
"It wasn't that bad, but when I acquired out of H (the crowd) appeared as if ants," she said. Juergensen estimated she saved about 30 percent and used her Christmas cash and gift cards.
"I'm by pointing out deals," she said. Having only started a new job, being an executive assistant, she said she used more restraint in her spending, and noticed exactly the same among other shoppers.
"I'm not bumping into individuals with a lot of bags,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," she said, attributing it to Black Friday sales so close to Christmas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Boxing Week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which spreads discounts over several days,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], making a one-day bonanza unnecessary.
But sales-seekers at Metrotown mall perhaps didn't obtain the same message,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Liz Atong tweeted she was "suffocating ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Boxing Day madness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
