USAF, Boeing demo unmanned target aircraft
TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla., Sept. 24 () -- A retired F-16 fighter modified for use as an unmanned aerial target has undergone a full scale demonstration flight. The test of the QF-16 was conducted by the U.S. Air Force and Boeing. The Air Force said two test pilots in a ground control station remotely flew the QF-16 in a mission profile that included auto takeoff, a series of simulated maneuvers, supersonic flight, and an auto land. "It was a little different to see an F-16 take off without anyone in it, but it was a great flight all the way around," said Lt. Col. Ryan Inman, Commander, 82nd Aerial Targets Squadron. "Now we have a mission capable, highly sustainable full scale aerial target to take us into the future."The successful flight opens the door for additional operational evaluations, gucci outlet online, including a live fire test. The QF-16 will use used by the Air Force, Navy and Army for weapons testing and other training operations.Boeing has so far modified six F-16s into the QF-16 configuration and low-rate initial production of the aircraft is scheduled to start before the end of this year.
