Rock ballet 'Rooster' hits Toronto stage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
On Saturday at the Four Seasons Centre,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the National Ballet of Canada steps out of ballet shoes and back into the '60s with a performance of Rooster, danced to the songs of the Rolling Stones.
Created for the Geneva ballet in 1991 by British choreographer Christopher Bruce,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Rooster is bound to show a side of some of the company dancers we've never seen before.
It's a very exciting ballet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], says Aleksandar Antonijevic,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who'll be revealed in a new guise, no longer the prince in white tights, but the Rooster Man in hot pink shirt and velvet jacket.
"Listening to these early songs of the Stones, you realize how bluesy and very grounded they were,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he says. "You can see all the fun on top,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but underneath (Bruce) is really emphasizing the battle of the sexes."
The choreographer chose eight tracks - "Little Red Rooster",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Paint It Black", "Lady Jane", "Sympathy with the Devil",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "Not Fade Away", "Ruby Tuesday",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "As Tears Go By" and "Play With Fire" - that to him lent a certain gravitas with their rhythm and blues roots.
The piece has been performed by at least 10 different companies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and never fails to attract an audience that would not ordinarily be found at the ballet.
"It's a fusion of contemporary and classical technique,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Bruce, whose repertoire runs to about 60 dances.
"There's a hint of the social dancing at the time." If you look closely,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he says, you'll see steps that used be danced in the discotheques of swinging London.
"It's definitely sexy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Heather Ogden says. "But it's still tasteful."
Rex Harrington, who is coaching the dancers in their roles, likens Rooster to a rock ballet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], built on a base of Graham technique and the contemporary ballet of Glenn Tetley.
