Moncur's Day in the Lakes
Not since the 50 mile day of the 1998 Marathon des Sables, in the Sahara, have I put in such an extended stint of continuous physical activity as I did at the weekend.
That bad-boy in the 40 degree heat of the Moroccan desert took about 10 hours - Sunday's effort in the Lakes took a little under 6 1/2 but was just as tough, if not tougher.
Race build up - The more I read about ADITL the more I worried,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I'd heard about the dreaded Kirkstone Pass climb and the half marathon fell run to finish and for someone with as limited triathlon experience as me (I'd only done one before) I felt completely undercooked. My bike riding is progressing slowly but could it cope with the 20% climbs up KP or would I have to face the ignominy of pushing Kiki to the top?
I'd decided not to start my stopwatch - unlike McGivern, the race veteran, this was my second event and completing it was my only goal.
SWIM- I was a bit gutted about this because it's my favourite discipline. It didn't go as well as I'd hoped and the worrying thing is I don't really know why. In training last week I swam 1500m in a pool in just under 25 minutes and felt really good. I've also done a fair bit of open water work and on Sunday I was expecting a time between 30 and 35 minutes for the 1,900m but must have come in closer to 40. I don't know the exact split because there was a problem with the race timing chips.
There was no mass-start carnage, which was good. I got bumped a few times but nothing too bad - there were only about 300 competitors mind - in Barcelona there could be over 2000.
My new Orca wetsuit felt fantastic and I looked a million bucks as I took my first few strokes but man was I nervous. All I could think about as I set off across Ullswater was Kirkstone and the dreaded climb. Maybe if I'd concentrated on the length of my stroke and sighting the swim,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I may have done a little better.
I knew I'd had a rubbish day in the water when I heard McGivern's dulcet tones about 2 minutes after entering T1- "Hey monkey man, you'd better get a move on" he squawked.
I'd beaten a skinny bloke, wearing Jackie Onassis goggles,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who swims as well as a house brick by a little over 100m give or take - not a good start to the day.
BIKE- After a leisurely transition which included my little ritual of donning LP's lucky red handkerchief and guzzling my 500ml rehydration mix I set off up the road. The bike was moving along very well and I managed, somehow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to maintain a pretty steady pace. I'd decided to ride well within myself to KP, try and get up it without getting off and then step up the pace a bit.
I left my ego on the start line and wasn't too bothered as a steady line of really good cyclists streamed past me - that's the perks of being a reasonable swimmer and shabby on the bike.
KP quickly loomed into view and it's an awesome sight. Mark and I had ridden up the first bit of it the night before which was when the butterflies started. It's the steepest road I think I've seen. Mark bragged that he'd ridden up steeper mountains during one of his Spanish training camps and I'm sure there were many experienced cyclists in Sunday's field who thought it was nothing more than a molehill - but for a bloke who only started riding a road bike in February, KP was a pretty daunting prospect believe me.
Anyway the guys at Leslie Bike Shop had put a 12/27 gear on my Kuota which was a godsend. Very early on in the climb I was out of the saddle on the easiest cog and concentrating like mad. If you miss a pedal stroke on a hill like that you're stuffed - it's too steep to get going again. Even though there were riders around me,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you could hear a pin drop it was that quiet. The only sound was that of heavy breathing and 100% effort. On the way up I passed a couple of guys who were walking, which made me feel slightly better, but I still don't know how my Kharma could go so slowly without falling over - at one point I'm sure my speedo wasn't registering anything!
Eventually we hit the final stretch - the hardest climb on the pass - and it was properly unpleasant - my quads had cooked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], spit was dribbling down my chin and my vision had started to tunnel. With one final effort I pulled myself over the top and within seconds was doing about 40mph down the other side,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dodging sheep and caravans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], screaming my head off.
RUN- I got off the bike in one piece and tore off on the run. My legs settled into it after the initial steep climb and I began to enjoy myself and overtake people. I think I managed to pass over 30 people in the half marathon fell run which was a great feeling. The views of Ullswater and the surrounding area from the top were fantastic - pity about the hellish climb getting there!
The ground under foot was slippery in some parts and I was glad of the new Inov8 shoes Shane Ohly provided us. Normal running shoes would have slowed me down for sure.
I finished the run in 2 hours 12 minutes which I was quite happy with considering the course and the weather,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
My overall time of 6 hours 29 minutes was also pretty acceptable considering I was never looking at the clock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I reckon I could take at least an hour off that on a 'normal' course,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
NUTRITION-I was really happy with this aspect of the race. I only drank fluids from start to finish - I didn't use any power gels or bars at any stage on the course and felt fine all the way around. I drank about 2 litres of Infint mix on the bike leg and nailed 3x600ml bottles of NUUN electrolyte mix on the run route. I was delighted with how easy the drinks systems worked and I'm really confident about it for Barcelona. Sunday was a hot day and as some competitors discovered, any nutrition mistakes were quite costly.
CHAT-Mark and I met some fantastic people at the race - notably the lads and lasses from the TriTalk website. This online community has proved invaluable to the pair of us idiots over the last couple of months for advice, route recces and amusing chat.
One of the TriTalk stalwarts - a guy called Slacko pulled out all the stops to finish on Sunday. He's an excellent triathlete but wasn't feeling too good during the race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which can happen from time to time. He was struggling a bit when I met him on top of the last mountain of the run route. I let him finish my bottle of NUUN which seemed to do the trick and give him the kick he needed to get off the hill - a fantastic effort.
Another racer - Graham Beck - jogged the last couple of miles with me. Graham was about five stone overweight, drank like he had hollow legs and chain smoked a few years ago. When he turned 40 he decided to do something about it and took up triathlons. He's now a multi-ironman competitor and is raising money for needy kids. If you want to help him you can donate here
Two other TriTalkers have also supplied some of the pics for this race report - thanks to Lee Ogden from Preston Tri and nine-year-old Jonny Holden who took some great snaps of the race,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and his dad Martin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], during the day.
POST RACE-ADITL was really tough but it has given both Mark and I the confidence to believe we may have a chance of completing Barcelona in a couple of months,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
My little colleague is producing some great results and beat me comfortably at the weekend - although by not as much as he was expecting methinks. I've got about 10 weeks to sort out my bike riding - if I do that then all bets are back on.相关的主题文章:
