'I've always liked to shock people'

His difficulties became apparent shortly after he took over the company. W J Brooks made lovingly crafted boots and shoes, 90 percent of these exported. "We were making 4,000 pairs per week," Pateman says. However the value of the pound was increasing, making his footwear more costly.
Within months, three interest rate increases made selling almost impossible: "We were paying wages, but we'd no work with our people." He'd one other issue: rival boots from Eastern Europe and China, made with little craftsmanship, but in a fraction of his labour costs.
Eventually,[url=http://duveticajacketsshopjp.gengfl.com/][b]デュベチカ通販[/b][/url], he'd to create 30 employees redundant. Deciding who needed to go and who could stay was awful," he admits that. "We knew these folks not just as workers, but as friends. That's how it's in a small family business."
Gloomily he soldiered on with a reduced workforce - however came the decision that changed his life. A woman in Folkestone who ran an outlet selling sexy lingerie, and boots - many of them thigh-high, in red or black leather or PVC - favoured by cross-dressers and drag queens, wanted ladies' shoes in men's sizes. It had been a controversial gamble, but it kept the factory going and his workers employed. "Experts have drawn lots of conclusions and told me such a smart move it was running a business terms," he admits that. "But when you're a family business, you do it since it needs to be done. It's not theory."
The shift into kinky footwear had some amusing consequences. Someone was required to model a pair of boots for the company's brochures and catalogues. Unsurprisingly, no male workers volunteered. The other of them suggested Pateman should do it.
"I had to learn how to walk in the boots," he sighs, "and obviously my legs couldn't be hairy, and so i needed to learn to shave them,[url=http://duveticajacketsmenonsalejp.halod.com/][b]デュベティカダウンジャケット[/b][/url], too." He looks sheepish in the recollection. It's hard to assume Pateman, a pleasing, balding man, putting himself through it.
Not all his workers were thrilled by the plunge into kinky footwear. "A lot of people didn't like focusing on a pair of boots," he admits that. And one employee who handled customers voiced his reluctance to have contact with them.
"He explained, these people are weird," says Pateman. "But a year later he came back in my experience and said he was wrong: these were lovely people, they could be trusted - plus they paid."
Earls Barton is a small,[url=http://duveticajacketssalejp.halod.com/][b]デュベティカ激安[/b][/url], tight-knit village, and Pateman is really a pillar from the community - a spokesman for that footwear industry and a part-time fireman. His venture raised a few eyebrows: "One friend was worried that carrying this out would somehow change me."
Yet he was already broad-minded: "I'd been a disc-jockey, so I'd been around, seen a bit of stuff. So when I got married, my spouse visited one of those Ann Summers parties, became a manager on their behalf and did it like a part-time job." He admits for an exhibitionist streak: "I'm some of those individuals who hears in regards to a fancy dress outfits party, and says: OK, so what can we all do to shock people?"
His first taste of fame came when the BBC2 series Trouble at the Top designed a documentary about his foray into the realm of kinky boots. It attracted 4.3 million viewers (an enormous audience for BBC2) and was repeated and shown world-wide. "I couldn't believe the calls we've got and the supportive letters we received," says Pateman.
Now comes the film, Kinky Boots, loosely adapted from his story. Very loosely, as it turns out: its hero, Charlie Price, is played by Australian actor Joel Edgerton, doing a creditable Midlands accent. In fact, Steve Pateman's father Richard continues to be alive. He was married through those hardship - and still is. Lola is completely fictional. And the real story has a bitter-sweet ending.
Nowadays, W J Brooks isn't any more. The kinky footwear range kept it going for a few years, but it finally closed down in 2000. He runs his business alone, from the converted terrace house in a quiet side street, adjoining that old factory. "It's the very first time ever I've been emotional after i watched a film," he says.
