Jason Garrett: We have to run more and we have to run better
Getty ImagesIt's a new season, but the Cowboys are having one of their old offensive problems again. In Sunday's loss to the Chiefs, the Cowboys had an offensive attack heavily weighted toward the pass. They called more than three time as many pass plays as they did running plays, a familiar lack of balance for a Jason Garrett-coached Dallas offense. And when they did run, they didn't do it well. They finished with 37 yards on 16 rushes, which is also a familiar state of affairs for the offense as is hearing Garrett lament the lack of a consistent running attack the day after a loss.We have to run the ball more than 16 times in the game, and we have to be able to run it throughout the game, Garrett said, via Carlos Mendez of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. We just simply have to do a better job of that. We didn't run the ball very well. Sixteen carries for 37 yards for just over 2 yards an attempt is not good enough.Garrett said part of the reason for the lack of balance was that the team spent a lot of time going no-huddle and Tony Romo was making calls at the line that slanted too heavily toward the pass, but offered little about how the team will rectify the ineffectiveness. That's really the significant issue, because the Cowboys didn't have much better balance in the opener against the Giants. They ran the ball much more effectively, however, and came away with a victory. As we said up top, it's an old story in Dallas. They finished 31st in rushing yards and rushing attempts last season as the team continually put their eggs in Romo's basket,Jimmy Choo UK, a strategy that didn't work out any better for them then than it did on Sunday.
