Company makes strides against shoe explosives
Bomb detection technology under development in San Diego for more than a decade could alleviate one of the bottlenecks at airport security checkpoints by eliminating the need for passengers to remove their shoes.
Quantum Magnetics,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the San Diego-based unit of InVision Technologies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], showed in field tests several years ago that its ultrasensitive technology could successfully detect land mines with no false alarms.
In tests conducted in a concrete bunker behind Quantum Magnetics Carmel Mountain offices, a prototype shoe scanner detects hidden explosives within three seconds, spokeswoman Caroleen Williams said. The company plans to conduct a round of world tests at San Diego Lindbergh Field in coming weeks, she added.
The shoe scanner is part of a broader program to develop advanced sensor technology for a variety of uses, an effort that has been under way at Quantum Magnetics since the early 1990s. The company research has been supported mostly by the Pentagon and Federal Aviation Administration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and more recently by the Transportation Security Administration.
Quantum Magnetics technology is based on quantum theory,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the esoteric realm at the heart of the atom where electrons can behave like particles or waves.
The company uses ultrasensitive electronics to identify the faint signals generated at the atomic level by nitrogen molecules within any explosive material,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The company sensor system can detect signals for specific nitrogen compounds that are as distinctive as a fingerprint,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Burnett said the shoe scanner was developed as an offshoot of a $1.7 million federally funded effort to create a wand that security guards could use at checkpoints to scan for explosives or weapons.
all the problems with suicide terrorists and shoe bombers became evident, we realized we could adapt that technology into a simple and easy way to screen shoes without making people take off their shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Burnett said.
Shoes became a security concern after British terrorist Richard Reid unsuccessfully tried in December 2001 to blow up a trans-Atlantic flight with a homemade shoe bomb. Reid,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who said he was a member of al-Qaeda,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], was sentenced last year to life in prison.
Efforts to develop new technologies also have attracted support in Congress. At a Feb. 12 hearing on airport screening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], some representatives were sharply critical of airport security shortcomings and urged TSA officials to spur work on new explosive detection systems.
are not one iota closer to routinely screening passengers and their carry-on baggage for explosives,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Rep. John Mica, R-Fla. view that as one of our most serious risks and potential threats. some luggage is scanned for explosive devices,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], airport security checkpoints currently screen passengers and their carry-on luggage for knives and other weapons.
Requiring passengers to take off their shoes no longer triggers the sort of complaints it once did,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said David S. Stempler,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], president of the Maryland-based Air Travelers Association. He said yesterday that airline passengers in general have grown accustomed to the nuisance the little striptease that goes on at airport security checkpoints.
Still, Nevada representatives have complained that thousands of travelers were delayed for up to four hours at the Las Vegas airport last month as roughly 110,000 people left town following the 2004 Consumer Electronics Show.
Randy Null, TSA chief technology officer, told the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee aviation subcommittee Feb. 12 that he supports the development of new technologies.
Null and TSA Assistant Administrator Tom Blank told the committee the current federal budget has about $150 million allotted to TSA for development of next-generation detection technology,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].相关的主题文章:
