10 things you need to know about the new UNC head football coach
The University of North Carolina introduced Larry Fedora as the new head football coach Friday afternoon. The Tar Heels look to turn the page on an ugly chapter in its football history, from the dismissal of head coach Butch Davis,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the resignation of athletic director Dick Baddour,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the lost season under interim coach Everett Withers, who did as good of a job as possible under the circumstances.
So let's take a look at the new football coach, Larry Fedora,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who should be nicknamed 'The Hat' in time. OK, I am just trying to start a craze, but if the Tar Heels marketing department decides to sell baby blue fedora hats with the UNC logo, I want a cut. I call it now!
10 - Larry Fedora played college football for a private liberal arts school named Austin College,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is located in Sherman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Texas. The co-ed, liberal arts institution is affiliated with the presbyterian church. Fedora was an honorable mention All-American in both 1983 and 1984, and he helped the team to an NAIA championship in 1981.
9 - Fedora spent time in the high school ranks in Texas, coaching at Garland High School, before moving to his first job in college football at Baylor, although it was well before QB Robert Griffin III ever even thought about attending that institution. He left Baylor in 1996 after six seasons coaching the running backs, tight ends and wide receivers.
8 - Fedora served as the offensive coordinator at Oklahoma State under head coach Mike Gundy, who is probably most famous for his rant in 2007,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is the year coach Fedora moved on to serve as head coach of the University of Southern Mississippi.
7 - Before his stint at OK State,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Fedora served on Ron Zook's coaching staff at the University of Florida, operating as the run game coordinator. He moved on to serve as the perimeter game coordinator in 2003 in Gainesville, before serving as the offensive coordinator in 2004. Fedora's offense ranked first in the SEC in '04,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], leading the conference in passing offense,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], total offense, third-down conversion percentage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], touchdown passes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], pass attempts and pass completions.
6 - Fedora has also had stops at Air Force, working as the coach with the quarterbacks and receivers from 1997-98,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as serving as the offensive coordinator for Middle Tennessee from 1999-01.
5 - In four seasons as head coach of Southern Mississippi from 2008-11, Fedora never had a record below .500 inside Conference USA,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], his teams finished at least one game above .500 overall, and made four straight bowl appearances.
4 - At USM, Fedora's team broke 36 school records in 2008,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the most total offensive yards with 5,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],636. It's especially notable since Southern Miss is also the school of future NFL Hall of Fame QB Brett Favre.
2 - You'll notice on Fedora's Twitter that he is still listed as the head coach of Southern Mississippi. That's because he is being allowed to coach his Golden Eagles (11-2) in the Hawai'i Bowl against Nevada (7-5). USM has 11 wins, which is already a school record.
